Global automakers reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic are accelerating efforts to restart factories from Wuhan to Maranello to Michigan, using safety protocols developed for China and U.S. ventilator production operations launched in recent weeks.

More than 190,000 face shields are on their way or delivered to New York and New Jersey, the company said.

Amid coronavirus, Ford, GM workers have become ventilator manufacturers.

As of Monday, Ford has shipped 200,000 masks to critical hotspots and first responders. By the end of the week, the company is projecting to have shipped more than 1 million devices.

Fiat Chrysler’s stock has dropped 40 percent in the last month.

While the idea of buying a car online has largely failed to catch on, some in the industry are hopeful this time buyers might give it a try as large parts of the country shut down and people adjust to conducting more business remotely.

Ford Motor Co. said on Thursday it was aiming to restart production at some plants in North America as early as April 6.

Ford is recalling more than 268,000 cars in North America.

The automakers had said on March 18 they would halt production until at least March 30

Ford said that it will also assemble plastic face shields.

The Defense Production Act has not been used because companies have volunteered to help, FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor said Sunday.

Ford and GM's spaces could continue to be used.

Customers who buy new 2019 and 2020 model year vehicles will qualify for the program.

The U.S. is "probably" in a recession as the auto, airline and other industries take hits due to the coronavirus pandemic, former Ford CEO Mark Fields told "Mornings with Maria" on Thursday.

The three companies employ about 150,000 auto workers at dozens of factories and parts depots across the country.
