The U.S. fell far short of its initial goal of inoculating 20 million people by the end of 2020, with health departments, hospital systems and long-term-care facilities beset by supply-chain bottlenecks, vaccine hesitancy and confusing, scattershot systems for making appointments.

Walgreens has administered more 1 million coronavirus vaccines in the nation’s long-term care facilities and to other vulnerable populations, the company said Friday.

Both companies were tapped by the U.S. Department of Health and Senior Services to administer vaccinations to the high-priority populations ahead of the general public in order to stem the spread of the virus. 

The two retail pharmacy chains announced Wednesday that their COVID-19 vaccine efforts are already underway at skilled nursing facilities, which require a higher acuity of patient care, in 49 states.

Walgreens on Friday began to administer Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine, which became the first such shot last week to receive emergency use approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

Walgreens announced that it has teamed up with 35,000 nursing and assisted living facilities nationwide to deliver COVID-19 vaccines, marking a "historic milestone and important step toward ending the pandemic."

Both companies are working quickly to be prepared for when the Food and Drug Administration issues a decision.

Amazon Pharmacy offers transparency on medication information and prices, home delivery, Prime member discounts and automatic 30-day refills on creams, pills, eye drops, inhalers, and insulin for patients with chronic conditions.

More than a dozen retail pharmacy chains have agreed to partner with the federal government to serve as Covid-19 vaccination sites under a plan developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
