Impact on students widening as strike jeopardizes college admissions testing and threatens lucrative college scholarships

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's mayor on Tuesday accused leaders of the city's powerful teachers union of using "political" issues to hold up a contract agreement to end a strike that has blocked students from classrooms for nine days.

The union had vowed to stay at the bargaining table until a deal was struck, but negotiators called it quits at 2 a.m. on Tuesday after 16 hours of back-and-forth.

"Somebody else 20 or 30 years down the road has to deal with the problem," Heritage Foundation economics research fellow Rachel Greszler told FOX Business. 

GM agreed to raise pay of workers hired after 2007 to top production wages of over $30 per hour within four years.

The teachers' strike has emphasized disparities between public schools in the city's poorest neighborhoods and those in well-off areas.

Chicago Public Schools said it had made a $500 million offer, but the union said the two sides are still $38 million apart.

The parties were in negotiations for more than 14 hours Saturday.
