Nintendo’s game revenue tops $1B — here are its big sellers

Mobile games on iOS, Android are leading sales

Nintendo, innovator of video game systems like Game Boy, Wii and Switch, has crossed the $1 billion revenue mark from its mobile games on iOS and Android operating systems, according to a report from data firm Sensor Tower.

And a big part of that push came from the brand’s Fire Emblem Heroes game, which has earned $650 million since its 2017 release. That's more than any other Nintendo mobile game. And it doesn't require a Nintendo console to play. Anyone with a phone or tablet running iOS or Android operating systems can download the game.

The tactical role-playing game is free to play but has in-app purchase options for users to buy items for their characters. The game’s developer, Developer Intelligent Systems, also keeps it interesting by adding seasonally-themed and limited-time features.

As of February 2019, the game had 14 million downloads and made $500 million worldwide.

Nintendo, whose stock has jumped 26 percent in the last year, is looking to roll out more mobile games in the hopes of mirroring Fire Emblem’s success. It released Mario Kart Tour in September, a mobile spinoff of its popular Mario Kart franchise for its stationary game systems. It was the most downloaded game on iOS last year, according to The Verge.
