Disney bringing 'Hamilton' to movie screens with Lin-Manuel Miranda
'Hamilton' is coming to a theater near you in 2021
Getting to see “Hamilton” on Broadway costs a serious amount of dough, but if you can hold off for another year, you can see the Tony Award-winning musical in a movie theater near you. And it’s all going to be done with the help of Disney.

“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed the news Monday afternoon from his official Twitter account.
“Disney presents: Hamilton. With The Original Broadway Cast. Filmed onstage at The Richard Rodgers Theatre. In A Theater Near You. October 15, 2021. #Hamilfilm,” Miranda wrote.

Within a half-hour, the tweet earned well over 20,000 retweets and 67,000 likes – which is a testament to the hip-hopera’s cultural acclaim.
The filmed production features the original Broadway cast from 2016, who performed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June of that year. This included Miranda in the starring role of Alexander Hamilton.

“I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations – ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Beauty and The Beast,’ ‘Aladdin,’” Miranda said in a press statement.
“I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton – a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater,” he added. “We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible.”
Miranda left his role in July 2016 and has worked on other projects, some of which have been Disney-related, including “Moana,” “DuckTales,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
He is also working on the upcoming live-action reboot of “The Little Mermaid” – which is great news for Miranda's 5-year-old son Sebastian, who just so happens to be named after the movie's Jamaican crab sidekick.

“Hamilton” received 16 Tony Award nominations in 2016 and won 11, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography. It also won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
From its debut in 2015, “Hamilton” has grossed over $633.7 million dollars from its 1,868 performances thus far, according to data from Broadway World. Over 2.5 million people have watched the live production on Broadway.
