U.S. stocks hit fresh highs on the first day of the final trading week of the year with the S&P 500 at a new record helped by gains in large-cap tech and energy names.
The broadest measure of stocks rose 1.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced by the same amount, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied over 352 points or 0.9% just shy of its all-time high.
