U.S. airlines make urgent call for new bailout as job cuts loom

The chief executives of American Airlines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways and the major aviation unions held a press conference Tuesday afternoon on Capitol Hill as part of a last-ditch effort for a six-month extension of the payroll support program granted through the $25 billion bailout from Congress back in March.  

United warns nearly 3,000 pilots could be grounded by October

"It’s important to note that our numbers are based on the current travel demand for the remainder of the year and our anticipated flying schedule, which continues to be fluid with the resurgence of COVID-19 in regions across the U.S.," United's senior vice president of operations Bryan Quigley wrote in a memo to employees.

United Airlines joins coronavirus face mask valve ban

United Airlines is the latest commercial air carrier to update its coronavirus-related personal protective equipment guidance to exclude face masks with built-in exhaust valves, the company announced Wednesday evening.
