Trump lawyer Michael Cohen cab tax bill said to reach $282K
Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and the subject of a federal investigation, owes hundreds of thousands of dollars to New York State in back taxes.
The Empire State tacked another $185,000 onto Cohen’s mounting tax bill associated with the 16 taxi companies he and his family own, according to Bloomberg. He now owes the state a total of $282,000.
Cohen said the dues are not owed by him, but instead by another man who operates more than 800 cabs in New York City, Bloomberg reported, including many of Cohen’s medallions.
The lawyer, according to The Associated Press, owns as many as 30 medallions in New York, which were once valued at more than $1 million each. In recent years, the value of a medallion has diminished as ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft gained in popularity. A medallion now goes for as little as $150,000, which has dragged some owners into debt.
Cohen is also involved in Chicago’s cab industry.
Cohen has been under investigation for months over his personal business dealings in New York, the Department of Justice said earlier this month. Investigators are also reportedly looking into his involvement with the taxi business.
