Business Owner Appealing Court Order On Same-Sex Wedding Cake
A cake shop owner is appealing a Colorado court’s decision that found him in violation of a law after he refused to create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple due to religious beliefs. In an interview on FOX Business Network’s Cavuto: Coast to Coast, Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips explained why he is appealing the ruling.
“My case is the government is trying to force me to violate my personal religious freedom and create a cake for a ceremony that I have objections to.”
Phillips’ attorney broke down the court’s decision.
“The court ruled that if [Phillips] provides any wedding services to any heterosexual couple, that he must provide that same service to a same-sex couple, even though he’s gladly served gays and lesbians for many years in his shop,” Phillips’ attorney, Kristen Waggoner, told Neil Cavuto. “It’s just a singular event that he has a religious conviction about and that’s that marriage is between a man and a woman.”
The dispute is having an economic impact on Phillips’ business.
“Right now we’re not making any wedding cakes, so that’s taken a pretty good chunk of my business away.”
