Trump touts strong economic numbers at National Prayer Breakfast

Trump also tied the bipartisan First Step Act to the healthy economy

President Trump touted his administration's economic record and low unemployment among minority communities while speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

"As we revive our economy, we are also renewing our national spirit," Trump said. "Today, we proudly proclaim that faith is alive and well and thriving in America."

The president focused on the same record-low unemployment for African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans as well as employment numbers among women — statistics that he and his campaign have been hammering ahead of the 2020 general election.

Trump also tied the bipartisan First Step Act to the healthy economy. The 2019 law has freed or reduced sentences for thousands of prisoners.

"Employers are hiring prisoners, and they would have never done it except for what we've done with criminal justice reform," he said. "But even before that because the economy has become so powerful, and these prisoners have done an incredible job. The employers are saying, 'Why didn't I do this 20 years ago?' So it's an incredible thing."

"It's something that everybody in this room should be proud about because you've always felt that way long before it was fashionable, so I want to thank you for that," Trump said.
