North Carolina county's Second Amendment sanctuary resolution up for vote

Second Amendment sanctuaries are springing up across the country

North Carolina's Gaston County will vote on a resolution that would declare the county a Second Amendment sanctuary on Tuesday, WBTV reported.

"The right is just trying to protect what we already have. We’re not trying to push anything on you," Gaston County Commissioner Chad Brown, who is co-sponsoring the resolution, told WBTV.

Gaston County, located near Charlotte, is far from the first county to make such a declaration, which essentially means the county won't enforce any laws it views as violating residents' Second Amendment rights. Counties in states from New Mexico to Florida have passed similar resolutions.

The county's vote comes shortly after thousands of gun-rights activists rallied peacefully at the Virginia Capitol on Monday under a heavy police presence, protesting plans by the state's Democratic leadership to pass gun-control legislation.

"I think if we don't get a grasp and Americans don't wake up to what's happening, we're going to be a world of hurt from the liberal left," Brown told WBTV.

Gaston County's Democratic party chair Daniel Caudill said the resolution is "unnecessary."

"As municipal ordinances do not supersede state or federal law it is curious to us as to why this specific subject is something our elected officials feel the need to work on," Caudill said in a statement according to WBTV. "There are many things our elected leaders at all levels can do to make this great country even greater. As a gun owner, I find this resolution unnecessary and hope our board of commissioners will find more worthy opportunities moving forward."
