U.S. Stocks Close Lower After Mixed Earnings

U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday following mixed earnings reports and upbeat new housing data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 33.84 points, or 0.2%, at 17,511.34, after being off as many as 59 points. The S&P 500 Index declined 5.52 points, or 0.3%, to finish at 2,096.92, after being off by as many as 8 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 32.35 points, or 0.6%, to close at 5.059.35, after hitting a 37-point deficit on the day.
