Tesla CEO Elon Musk admitted Thursday there was no guarantee that the electric car maker’s upcoming launch of the "Cybertruck" will be successful.
Musk made the admission in response to an an op-ed entitled, "Tesla’s Cybertruck Will Be Company’s First Flop," which argued the vehicle will likely miss sales expectations.
"To be frank, there is always some chance that Cybertruck will flop, because it is so unlike anything else. I don’t care," Musk wrote on Twitter. "I love it so much even if others don’t. Other trucks look like copies of the same thing, but Cybertruck looks like it was made by aliens from the future."
Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck at a high-profile event in late 2019. While the truck’s futuristic design has drawn mixed reviews since its debut, recent estimates suggest the company has accepted more than one million reservation deposits at $100 apiece. Since the deposits are refundable, they won’t necessarily translate into vehicle sales.

Musk noted that Tesla has kept the Cybertruck’s design "almost exactly" the same as when it was first unveiled.

"Just some small tweaks here & there to make it slightly better," he added.
During a January earnings call, Musk said Tesla expects to begin "volume production" of the Cybertruck in 2022. The truck’s base model is priced at $39,900.
