Strike over jobs cuts at Brazilian subsidiary of Volkswagen ends with reversal of layoffs

Workers at the Brazilian subsidiary of German automaker Volkswagen say they have ended the strike they started 10 days ago to protest the dismissal of 800 workers.

The metalworkers union in the Sao Paulo suburb of Sao Bernardo Do Campo says on its website that the strike was called off after the company reversed the layoffs. The union says work will resume on Monday.

In a statement, Volkswagen says it is satisfied with the agreement reached with the union that includes "adjustments" like voluntary retirement plans.

The company says the strike brought its assembly line to a standstill but has declined to reveal the number of cars produced each day at the plant.
