Schumer: Binghamton University to get $20M in US funding for high-tech electronics research

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says Binghamton University has been chosen to receive $20 million in federal funding to participate in a $100 million initiative to develop high-tech electronic and computer devices.

The New York Democrat announces Friday that the Department of Defense has designated the university as one of the institutions nationwide that will develop flexible hybrid electronics, technology used in advanced robotics, computers, biomedical and sensory devices.

Schumer says the FlexTech Alliance, a California-based consortium of electronics manufacturing leaders, has been working with Binghamton and other universities to obtain the federal funding.

He says the initiative could bring 50 jobs to the Binghamton area within the first two years, and possibly as many as 200 overall.
