Police probing possible credit union robbery plot find man with apparent bomb strapped to body

Police investigating a possible robbery plot have encountered a man with what appeared to be a bomb strapped to his body at a Connecticut credit union.

The state police bomb squad has rendered the device safe. The man has been taken to a hospital.

Police say the events began Monday morning with a report of a home invasion in Bristol and ended at Achieve Financial Credit Union in nearby New Britain. Records show the home is owned by the credit union's chief financial officer.

New Britain police Chief James Wardwell says officials are investigating whether the man was forced by other people to take part in a robbery and whether the device attached to him was a real bomb. He says the suspects remain at large.

No one was injured.
