New York adopts regulations for liquefied natural gas storage and fueling facilities

New York state has adopted regulations covering fueling and storage facilities for liquefied natural gas.

The safety regulations announced Wednesday will allow LNG storage facilities in New York for the first time since 1973, when the state imposed a moratorium following a Staten Island explosion that killed 40 workers.

The regulations would make New York the only state to require a permit for storage of LNG, which can be used as lower cost, cleaner fuel for truckers.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says it expects nearly all permit applications in the first five years to be for facilities designed to supply fuel for long-haul tractor-trailers and large capacity fleet trucks that use LNG as a substitute for diesel fuel.
