New Media to buy Worcester Telegram & Gazette in broader acquisition of parent Halifax Media

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette is changing hands for the second time in recent months as New Media Investment Group Inc. acquires its parent Halifax Media Group.

New York-based New Media announced Thursday it will buy Florida-based Halifax, which owns 36 Southeast newspapers, for $280 million cash. The deal is expected to close early next year. New Media CEO Michael Reed called it "an exciting day for our company."

New Media's subsidiary GateHouse Media LLC operates several eastern Massachusetts dailies and the Providence Journal in Rhode Island.

The Telegram & Gazette reported its publisher James Normandin said he looks forward to the opportunities that will come with new ownership, and the paper will maintain its focus on comprehensive local coverage.

Halifax bought the T&G in May from Boston Globe and Boston Red Sox owner John Henry.
