With the U.S. and global markets having their worst week in years, here is a breakdown on how bad the damage has been:
U.S. Markets:
The Dow Jones industrial average: down 7 percent in August, and 7.7 percent in 2015.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index: down 6.3 percent this month, and 4.3 percent this year.
The Nasdaq composite: down 8.2 percent this month, and 0.6 percent this year.
Europe:
Germany's DAX: down 10.5 percent in August, but up 3.3 percent in 2015.
France's CAC-40: down 8.9 percent this month, but up 8.4 percent this year.
