How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Tuesday
A jump in oil prices helped push U.S. stocks indexes sharply higher for a second day on Tuesday. All 10 industry sectors of the Standard and Poor's 500 index rose, led by a 2.8 percent gain in energy shares.
On Tuesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 305.36 points, or 1.8 percent, to 17,666.40.
The S&P 500 index climbed 29.18 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,050.03.
The Nasdaq rose 51.05 points, or 1.1 percent, to 4,727.74.
For the week:
The Dow is up 501.45 points, or 2.9 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 55.04 points, or 2.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 92.50 points, or 2 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 156.67 points, or 0.9 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 8.87 points, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 8.32 points, or 0.2 percent.
