Germany's Merkel says she's waiting to see if Greece offers 'sustainable proposal' to pay debt

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN'-geh-lah MEHR'-kuhl) says Greece's new government must come up with a sustainable proposal to pay its debt in order to stay part of the eurozone.

Merkel spoke Monday at a joint news conference with President Barack Obama at the White House. She says Germany wants Greece to stay part of the eurozone, but that Greece must adhere to basic rules of the bailout it received. She says those International Monetary Fund programs must be the basis for any discussions in the future.

Merkel says she's waiting to see what Greece puts on the table at or shortly after an emergency meeting of eurozone finance ministers Wednesday.

Greece's new left-wing government has pledged to seek forgiveness from the bailout debt.
