First Solar-SunPower 'yieldco' Smaller Than SunEdison's Terraforma
First Solar Inc. and SunPower Corp.'s subsidiary, 8point3 Energy Partners LP, will be smaller and less geographically diversified than SunEdison Inc.'s TerraForm Power Inc. , analysts at RBC said in a note Tuesday. Most of 8point3's portfolio -- projects producing 432 megawatts --- comprises utility-scale power plants, three-quarters of which are power purchasing agreements with 20 to 24 years of remaining contract life, RBC said. All projects in the initial portfolio are located in the U.S., RBC said. First Solar and SunPower have named their joint subsidiary 8point3 after the time it takes sunlight to reach earth. The yieldco -- a subsidiary that bundles power plants and other assets and pays out much of its cash flow to shareholders -- will list on the Nasdaq at a time yet to be determined.
