Confederate Flags Are Selling Like Crazy On Amazon

As Amazon.com Inc. joined retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. , Sears Holdings Corp. and eBay Inc. in announcing it's dropping the sale of Confederate-flag-related merchandise, sales of the flag have surged. As of Tuesday afternoon, various styles of Confederate flags were listed as the top "movers & shakers" -- which identifies items seeing the biggest sales-ranking gains over the past 24 hours -- in the patio, lawn and garden category. One particular flag is listed as the top mover, seeing sales jumping 5,466% from a ranking of 167 previously to No. 3 in that department. The No. 2 mover was another Confederate flag, with sales surging almost 5,000%, jumping to the No. 54 seller in the category from No. 2,589. A search for "Confederate flag" on Amazon.com yielded almost 30,000 third-party Confederate-flag-related merchandise results. In addition to flags, there are also knives, apparel, phone cases and blankets containing the flag image on offer. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Monday called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the state capitol building after the shooting deaths of nine African Americans during a prayer meeting in Charleston, S.C., prompted a re-examination of the symbolic flag.
