Brazilian court overturns manslaughter conviction of son of former Brazil billionaire

The son of former Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista has won his effort to overturn a conviction on involuntary manslaughter charges for killing a cyclist in 2012.

Thor Batista had been sentenced to two years of community service for the fatal crash, which happened while he drove his Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren at night through a low-income suburb of Rio de Janeiro. He also had his license suspended for two years and was ordered to pay a fine of $346,000.

An appeals court ruled Thursday night there was no evidence to back charges he was speeding at the time of the accident.

Batista had yet to pay the fine or perform the community service.

Prosecutors can appeal the court's ruling.

The elder Batista is on trial on charges of insider trading.
