Audi recalls 1.2 million cars, citing fire risk

Audi is recalling about 391,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada and 1.2 million globally, saying overheated electric coolant pumps could cause a fire.

The recall includes certain cars and SUVs with 2.0-liter turbocharged engines. It covers the 2013 to 2016 A4, 2013 to 2017 A5, 2012 to 2015 A6 and 2013 to 2017 Q5.

The same models were part of a recall last year. Dealers completed software updates, but the problem has persisted.

Audi, a division of Volkswagen, notified U.S. safety regulators that moisture in electric coolant pumps may cause an electrical short. The pumps are also at risk of becoming blocked with debris.

The automaker has received reports of fires, an Audi spokesperson told The Associated Press.

Owners will receive a letter notifying them of the recall starting in June. Audi dealers will replace the pumps free of charge.
