Assembly passes bills requiring contractors use American-made products

New Jersey's Assembly has passed a package of bills requiring companies that have contracts with state entities to use products made in the United States.

The five-bill package passed Thursday despite an effort by Republicans to defeat it. Republican Leader Jon Bramnick denounced the bills, saying they would drive business from the state.

The bills call for companies with contracts with public colleges and universities, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Delaware River Port Authority, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission and the Delaware River and Bay Authority to use products made in the United States when fulfilling their contracts.

Supporters say they represent an investment in the future.

The bills will now go to Republican Gov. Chris Christie.
