Akron company markets farm-monitoring drones to keep eye on crops, cattle, soil, disease

A new Akron company is marketing drones to farmers as a way to keep an eye on hundreds of acres of fields.

Event 38 Unmanned Systems offers machines that can take high-resolution pictures of crops, cattle and soil.

A report Sunday in the Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/1qGVGmn ) says the company is working with Ohio State University's Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster to refine the art of crop scouting.

Rory Lewandowski (loo-en-DOW'-skee), a county extension educator in Wayne County, says the drones can help on farms of 400 to 800 acres that can be hard to walk.

He says farmers can take the information from drones to spread fertilizers and pesticides more strategically.
