The National League of Cities analyzed 100 "state of the city" speeches by mayors of U.S. cities of varying size and region. The hot topics, as measured by the percent of speeches that devoted at least three paragraphs' worth of remarks to detailing them as a priority, were:
— Economic development: 75 percent
— Infrastructure: 57 percent
— Public safety: 55 percent
— Budgets: 43 percent
— Education: 41 percent
— Housing: 28 percent
— Data/technology: 21 percent
— Environment/energy: 16 percent
— Demographics: 11 percent
— Health care: 9 percent
