Grocery price comparison highlights the cost of everyday staples in 4 major metros
The comparison tracked prices of store-brand grocery staples across 4 US markets

The cost of a basic grocery basket varied widely among four major retailers in a FOX Business price comparison covering select ZIP codes in Texas, Illinois, California and Washington, D.C.
The review compared store-brand prices for eight common items: a gallon of whole milk, a dozen large white eggs, one pound of butter, wheat bread, canned black beans, canned diced tomatoes, all-purpose flour and granulated sugar.
Among the stores and prices reviewed, Aldi – a discount grocery chain – posted the lowest basket total in all four markets, while Walmart generally finished close behind. In markets where no namesake Kroger or Albertsons stores exist, FOX Business used chains owned by the two companies.

In the Addison, Texas, area, the basket totaled $14.90 at Aldi, $16.54 at Walmart, $18.44 at Kroger and $21.12 at Albertsons.
Aldi does not operate a store in Addison, so prices from nearby Dallas stores were used.
In Chicago, the same basket cost $16.60 at Aldi and $15.86 at Walmart, compared with $19.64 at Kroger-owned Food 4 Less (a discount grocer) and $27.52 at Albertsons-owned Jewel-Osco.

In the Burbank, California, area, baskets totaled $16.59 at Aldi, $17.90 at Walmart, $23.03 at Kroger-owned Ralphs and $26.83 at Albertsons-owned Vons.
In Washington, D.C., the basket cost $15.61 at Aldi, $17.40 at Walmart, $22.53 at Kroger-owned Harris Teeter and $22.82 at Albertsons-owned Safeway.
The comparison used similar store-brand products when available.
