U.S. Economic Data to be Released Live on Websites, Rather than Through Media Lockups

Due to a technology problem at the Labor Department, economic data releases Thursday could be published with a short delay.

As result of the technology issue, the government will only release economic data live on its website rather than providing an advance copy to the media.

The Commerce Department's retail sales report for November and the Labor Department's jobless claims report for Dec. 9 and import price report for November will be released on the agencies' websites at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Typically for these and other reports, the government shares the data with media organizations, including Dow Jones Newswires, shortly before the public release. These closed briefings, called lockups, allow reporters to prepare headlines and stories to be released concurrently with the public disclosure of the data.

Friday's lockups, which would have been held at the Labor Department, have been canceled.
