Tweet Business of the Day: RockScar Love
Who: Amy Tippins, 36, @RockScarLove
What: A clothing company focused on helping those with physical, mental and emotional scars celebrate their differences
When: July 2010
How: Tippins had previously worked in financial services, and despite her success, she felt unfulfilled. In 1993 she underwent a liver transplant and wanted to start a business that allowed her to give back to her donor family and help others that had been through similar physical or emotional experiences that had left them scarred in some way.
RockScar Love sells clothing and accessories with "scar themes" and also donates between 10 to 20% of pre-profit proceeds to transplant-related charities.
"We all have scars based on emotional or physical trauma that our bodies have been through, and I wanted to create something fresh and hot that said, 'Whatever your life challenge is, rise up and be proud of it,'" Tippins said.
Where: Atlanta, Ga.
In her own words: "We are living in a world that focuses so much on beauty, and on women and kids being perfect. This company represents something I have been through, and something [people] can look at down the road and know they will figure this out."
