What: Mike the Gardener Enterprises, and its “Seeds of the Month” club, which sends members new seeds every month though its subscription service.
When: October of 2009.
How: Podlesny is a third-generation vegetable gardener who has been planting and growing veggies since age five. After writing his book, “Vegetable Gardening for the Average Person,” Podlesny was contacted by several farmers from around the U.S. to see if he would be interested in selling their seeds. From there, he began his Seeds of the Month Club, which sends members new seeds monthly starting at $3 a month, from farms in Oregon, South Carolina and Utah.
“We have taken something very dry, like selling seeds, and added a fun element to it,” he said. “You never know what you will get.”
Where: Burlington, N.J.
In his own words: “I think I have some of the best customers,” Podlesny said. “They really interact and get into it on the page. People who never grew anything help others. Its neat, you are seeing people’s progress in real time with their gardens.”
