Who: Deb Soromenho, 45, @AweShop

What: A handmade jewelry line designed and made by Soromenho

When: March 2009

How: While working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, Soromenho took up jewelry making as a hobby. She soon found she enjoyed the freedom of working for herself and making her own original pieces.

"I struggled for a long time with making art for somebody else's standards. I wanted to be creative on my own, and do something I love to do. This allows me to create exactly what I want, and if people love it they buy it, and if not, they don't."

Where: Bethesda, Md.

In her own words: "I love that freedom of finding people like me, that love my jewelry. I pull inspiration from different cultures, art and architecture. That really sets my look apart from other jewelry."
