Turning a Wine Passion Into a Successful Business
Questions for Our Wine Pro
What is your death row wine?
Chances are my death row wine would be something that I have never tried but always wanted to. Two wines come to mind, a 1997 Screaming Eagle and/or a 1990 Chateau Margaux.
What region produces the best wine?
There is no “best” region per say, it all depends on what varietal and style of wine you are looking for. If I was looking for a big, bold Cabernet Sauvignon I would have to say Napa Valley. If I was looking for a crisp summer Sauvignon Blanc that is very easy to drink alone, I might look to pick up a Sancerre from France’s Loire Valley.
What is the best wine and food pairing you’ve ever had?
It seems to change often. Right now my favorite wine is food pairing is Play Date Chardonnay with almond butter poached lobster, roasted baby fennel, orange supremes and almonds from Restaurant Nicholas in Red Bank, N.J. I have been known to go back night after night, it is that good!
What will the U.S. wine industry look like in 10 years?
I firmly believe that the Internet and social media will fundamentally change the way people recommend and buy wine. In addition, I anticipate consumers to continue to be adventurous in the wines they drink by seeking out varietals like Malbec, Tannat, and Carmenère to name a few.
