Small Business Spotlight: Farm to Home Milk

Who: Jonathan Flaum, founder, @FarmToHomeMilk

What: Organic food and milk delivery to customers’ homes

When: 2013

Where: Ashville, N.C.

How:  Flaum previously worked as a writer and consultant in the corporate world, but says in 2012 he decided it was time to strike out on his own and pursue a more family-oriented career. While visiting with friends in Denver, Flaum saw an opportunity when the milkman came to the door.

“The idea really resonated with my wife and kids,” he said. “I grew up in New York, and was really close to my grandfather in the Bronx. He always told stories about a time of no phones, no cars, and always had great things to say about the milkman and the ice man.”

FarmToHomeMilk comes from a fifth-generation family farm with organic meat, pork and eggs, Flaum said. The company made its first delivery just a week ago, and at press time had 175 customers.

Quote from the owner: “I did my time in the corporate world,” Flaum said. “Now I just want to make a decent living, and show my kids what real work is.”
