The most popular summer vacation spots

Orlando will remain the most popular summer vacation spot in America this year, according to AAA.

The travel group said Tuesday most Americans are planning trips to warm-weather destinations such as Walt Disney World’s home of Orlando, which held onto its title as the top city for summer vacations. Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii, are more popular than before, climbing to second and sixth place in the rankings, respectively.

Despite rising gas prices, most travelers staying in the U.S. this summer plan to take a road trip. AAA expects nearly two-thirds (64%) of those planning a family trip to drive. The national average for regular gasoline is $2.81 a gallon, and forecasts call for elevated pump prices during the peak summer driving season.

More than one-third of families who are planning a trip will travel overseas. Rome has jumped to first place among the most popular international destinations, followed by Vancouver and Dublin.

AAA’s rankings are based on travel bookings for trips between June 1 and Aug. 15.
