Small Business of the Day: Studio Cie Wellness Spa

Who: Carol Cisneros, 56, @studiocie

What: A health, wellness and beauty spa

When: May 2006

How: Cisneros got into the beauty industry nearly 25 years ago while working to support her five children as a contracted makeup artist at a local salon. The owners asked her if she would be interested in opening a spa in the empty space next door, and Studio Cie was born.

The spa integrates holistic therapies based on Eastern medical philosophies with spa treatments, and tailors services to its clients' needs.

"We are not a cookie cutter [spa]," she said. "We design treatments based on the needs of our clients."

Where: Lakewood, Calif.

In her own words: "We are more concerned with treating the entire body; not just outwardly, but systemically, mentally and emotionally—the whole package."
