Ohio police chief with outsize Facebook audience resigns after investigation led to suspension

A small-town Ohio police chief who drew an outsize following with his blunt, frequently humorous Facebook commentary is resigning days after being suspended.

A Brimfield Township trustee says Chief David Oliver submitted his resignation Thursday. A special trustees meeting is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Trustee Mike Kostensky said an investigation into gender discrimination concerns led to Oliver's suspension earlier this week. Kostensky wouldn't discuss details.

Oliver confirmed his departure in a post on his individual Facebook page Friday morning. He wrote that untrue allegations have circulated, that his management style was used against him and that he's been targeted by disgruntled people, including current employees.

His department near Kent serves about 10,000 northeast Ohioans but reaches many more people through its Facebook page, which has more than 177,000 "likes."
