Is J. Law Tackling Hollywood’s Gender Wage Gap All Wrong?
One of the most powerful women in business says skill is the key to eliminating gender inequality.
During an interview on the FOX Business Network’s Mornings with Maria, Deloitte CEO Cathy Engelbert said: “The conversation needs to continue to be at the top of the list. I think companies need to critically evaluate and be measuring their advancement… We need to drive capabilities and skill sets. Women have to raise their hand.”
Engelbert explained how to address the gender wage gap in the workplace.
“You have to trust your leadership. You need to make sure if you are a leader in that company male or female… You have to bring men into the conversation and make sure they understand that this is being watched. That every company with analytics today, it’s easy to do analysis and determine where the gap is and why the gap is -- and is it because there’s a skills gap or is it because it’s a true wage gap?” she said.
She also commented on actress Jennifer Lawrence’s anger over pay inequality in Hollywood contracts.
“I think it’s interesting that this conversation is in Hollywood but it’s also in the boardroom, it’s also incorporates and I was struck by Jennifer’s thought that she’s trying to find a likeable way to negotiate. Again, this needs to be less about gender, less about trying to be likeable as a woman, it’s more about driving our skills and capabilities so that ultimately we narrow and eliminate the gap.”
