EPA chief says Supreme Court ruling on mercury pollution will not affect Obama climate rule

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency says a Supreme Court ruling that undermined a federal rule targeting mercury pollution will not affect the Obama administration's plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions to slow the effects of global warming.

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy says she is disappointed at last week's court ruling, but says comparing the mercury rule to the nearly finalized climate plan is "comparing apples and oranges."

McCarthy says the Obama administration is on track to complete the so-called Clean Power Plan' next month. The plan sets unprecedented carbon dioxide limits for coal-fired power plants that contribute to global warming.

President Barack Obama is counting on drastic emissions reductions from the new rules to meet the U.S. commitment to a major global climate treaty that he's been championing.
