Cubs Crowned Champs in ‘Back to the Future Part II’
Will it be the Chicago Cubs or New York Mets in the World Series? If you’re a movie buff, you might find yourself remembering the 1989 flick ‘Back to the Future Part II’, which predicted the Chicago Cubs becoming world champions against the Miami Gators in 2015.
During an interview on the FOX Business Network’s Varney & Co. ‘Back to the Future Part II’ co-writer Bob Gale said: “What was the most absurd thing that you could think of in 1989? What would make Marty McFly go what? Make him what to bet on sports.”
Although the Gators are not an actual team Gale said the guess thirty years ago wasn’t far off.
“In 1989 when the movie came out there was no Major League Baseball in Miami. So, we predicted by 2015 there would be Major League Baseball -- Ok, we got the league wrong and we did get the team wrong, we said it was the Miami Gators, but that’s pretty good. Wouldn’t you say?”
Gale said the prediction has triggered resurgence in the movie.
“My phone is ringing off the hook; my email is going crazy… I didn’t know, I’m a Cardinals fan actually so the Cubs are perennial rivals, friendly rivalry -- but I’ve always liked the Cardinals.” He added: “The interesting thing about this is that if the Cubs don’t make it, the joke is still funny. So whatever happens they’ll still be talking about it one way or the other.”
