Small Business Spotlight: BlogMutt

Who: Scott Yates, @blogmutt

What: Blog services for small businesses

When: August 2011

Where: Boulder, Co.

How: Co-founder Scott Yates says BlogMutt launched as a blog service targeting small businesses that are looking for online content and writers to create that content.

“Most problems aren’t technical. They just need to blog every week,” Yates said. “We’re able to get businesses good content every week.”

BlogMutt’s freelance writers create blog posts for small business clients, including retailers, app developers and yoga studios. Yates said stay-at-home moms and retired men are some of the writers working for BlogMutt, which employs a developer and marketing professional full-time.

“What’s most surprising is I thought we would get college kids to write,” he explained. “I tried to really hard to recruit college kids, but they can’t seem to get things together.”

Quote from the owner: “Small businesses can hire writers, but it’s hard to do. They can hire writers for $1 a post, but it’s bad. A public relations firm can make fantastic content, but it’s expensive. We give small businesses great content that’s affordable.”
