Today's Question: What are your favorite tools and resources for recruiting? Why do you use these resource?

The answers below are provided by members of FounderSociety, an invitation-only organization comprised of ambitious startup founders and business owners.

1. Hackathons

At hackathons, you get to see teams use their skills under pressure, deal with exhaustion, and deliver something to a customer. It's a trial by fire that lets you see how people think and how they work. You actually get to see programmers code and debug stuff. You also get to see what they really know and how they deal with gaps in their knowledge.

2. Networking

We're a lean team, and like every other small business, we have little room to hire the wrong person.

Networking on a consistent basis keeps the pipeline full of potential hires and people who can recommend potential hires. Recommendations and vetted referrals from people you know and trust provide peace of mind in the hiring process.

3. Co-Working Spaces

Find the cheapest co-working space in town and stop by regularly. These spaces tend to house underfunded startups with lower chances of success. Thus, they are home to companies that have high levels of employee turnover. Nevertheless, these people had the willingness to work for startups, and some of the former employees of the worst-led companies can be the greatest hires.

4. A Strong Social Mission and Great PR

I get about 20 applicants a week, and all we've posted on our website are paid internship opportunities. By having a strong social mission and by constantly telling our story in the press, we've been able to get incredible applicants who want to be a part of our purpose-driven business.

5. Jazz.co

I highly recommend using Jazz.co to help streamline the recruiting process. This app allows you to integrate all of your job postings on your company site and enables applicants to apply easily. As part of the monthly subscription, the app shares your job postings on top career search sites. We have a great funnel of applicants thanks to Jazz!

6. Recruiting Firms

I've used Indeed, Craigslist, and ZipRecruiter before. From those experiences, I learned I was not as good at HR as I thought I was. We now use a recruiting firm because the people there are experts in HR and can get what used to take us 30-45 days done in 10-15 days with much better candidates.

7. LinkedIn

LinkedIn has proven invaluable to our recruiting efforts. It offers a lot of information about potential new hires, and we can reach out directly if someone looks like a great fit. We love that LinkedIn also shows mutual connections, so we ask for feedback from colleagues.
