Companies in the private sector added 90,000 jobs in September, payroll processing firm ADP said in its latest report on Wednesday.
The figure is above economists’ estimates of a gain of 70,000 jobs and up from the prior month's revised 36,000 payrolls.
"It's a strong report," said ADP chief economist Nela Richardson. "After a three-month slowdown, job creation rebounded and pay growth remained solid."

Which industries are hiring the most workers, according to the ADP report?
Education and health services added 55,000 positions, leading job creation in September. Leisure and hospitality added 22,000, and manufacturing added 17,000 positions.

Construction added 15,000 jobs in the month while other services added 6,000 and information added 3,000.

Hiring in trade, transportation and utilities was flat in September.

On the negative side, financial activities lost 16,000 jobs while professional and business services lost 11,000. Natural resources and mining lost 1,000 positions in the month.

Large businesses – those with 500 or more employees – gained 34,000 jobs in August. Hiring for businesses with 50 to 499 employees totaled 54,000 and establishments with fewer than 50 employees gained 23,000 jobs.

Base pay rose 3.2% year over year and gross pay was up 4.7%.

The ADP data is released before the Labor Department's nonfarm payrolls report, which is due on Friday morning and can differ notably. The government data is expected to show an increase of 84,000 positions, below the unexpected loss of 23,000 reported in July. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 4.1%.
