Comey's Trump-Russia FBI Investigation is Costing Taxpayers: Haley Barbour
The fallout from the firing of FBI director James Comey goes well beyond politics and Americans may bear the brunt in costs and safety, according to former RNC Chairman Haley Barbour.
“I can’t quantify it from the federal government but it does cost [taxpayers],†he said during an interview on the FOX Business Network. “It also presents the cost of taking FBI agents off other matters, criminal matters,†he cautioned.
Barbour also said American’s should hone-in on the memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—a career Department of Justice attorney appointed by the Obama Administration, who advised President Trump on Comey.
“I haven’t seen the memo, but I assume it’s because Comey usurped the power of the attorney general when he said that the FBI and he had decided that there would be no prosecution of Hillary Clinton,†he said. “The FBI doesn’t have any authority to decide who ought to be prosecuted and not. Their job is to recommend to the attorney general.â€
Comey, who was leading a 10-month investigation into the alleged Trump campaign-Russia collusion, carries major implications, according to Barbour.
While we still don’t know what urged President Trump to fire the FBI director, in his letter to Comey, President Trump mentioned he was informed that he was not under investigation.
While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.
