Kasich Following Delegate Count... and Masters Leaderboard
At a campaign stop in the Bronx, New York, Republican presidential candidate John Kasich weighed in on the current GOP delegate count and the Masters golf tournament.
“We don’t predict, but we’re running I think second here in New York and second in Maryland. We’re starting to get to a place where I can perform pretty well. We’ll see, everybody needs to get delegates, I’ve been saying for weeks that we were headed for an open convention. I think a lot of people questioned that, ‘what’s he talking about?’ It is exactly what’s going to happen, and it’s going to be exciting,” Kasich told the FOX Business Network’s Connell McShane.
Kasich further explained his strategy in regards to delegates.
“Well, we’re going to keep working to accumulate delegates. If we win, great. But the key is to accumulate delegates, and that’s what we’re working on, so we think we’ll get delegates [in New York], we’ll get delegates in Pennsylvania, Maryland, we just keep plugging,” said Kasich.
Despite being busy on the campaign trail, Kasich said, “I’m keeping track of the leaderboard,” referring to the Masters golf tournament underway at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Does he predict a winner?
“I don’t know, I mean it’s really hard, it depends if the wind is blowing. If the wind is blowing, it’s going to take a good wedge game, and Zach Johnson right now is tied at the lead with two under, so we’ll see,” he said.
He also shared something he learned during his own time playing golf at the Augusta National Golf Club.
“A little unknown story is that I played at Augusta years ago. And I found out when I first got there that the caddies bet on you. And I forgot about it until we got to the eighteenth hole and I hit my drive out by the sand traps on the left. And I said to the caddie ‘I want to hit a seven iron.’ He said ‘no, you need to hit a six iron.’ And we were arguing, and then I realized that he’s betting on me. So I hit a six iron and I knocked it in the hole for a two. It was the first two recorded at Augusta in like fifty years,” Kasich said.
