Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Sunday night he would hire a special prosecutor to examine his opponent, Hillary Clinton’s, use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State.

“People have been — their lives have been destroyed for doing one-fifth of what you’ve done. And it’s a disgrace. And honestly, you ought to be ashamed of yourself,” Trump said during the second presidential debate at Washington University in St. Louis.

In response to Clinton saying she’s happy he isn’t in charge of the laws of the U.S., Trump responded: “Because you’d be in jail,” causing the audience to break into laughter.

Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft joined the FOX Business Network to weigh in.

“If I were going to try and suggest a way to do it, I think if someone is appointed, they should be someone who can convince the American people that it’s not a political thing,” Ashcroft said.

He added: “You have an administration that undercuts the rule of law in substantial ways and frankly, you wonder whether there’s a complicity in the Department of Justice. And then you look at Hillary Clinton last night, when asked what she wants in a Supreme Court justice, she says she wants justices that will attend her agenda and be supportive of the agenda. And Donald Trump says ‘no, we not ought be oriented in the court system to a political agenda; we should be oriented to the Constitution.’”

On Sunday night’s town hall-style debate, Ashcroft said:

“I think the debate refocused the country on a series of issues that are important to our future.”
