During trading today, the S&P 500 dropped 0.3%, and the Utilities sector (XLU) showed little change.

As a proxy for the sector, the ETF tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLU was down 1.4% over the last thirty trading days. The S&P 500, in comparison, went up 4.9%.

RGC Resources (RGCO) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 2.9%. The stock closed at $18.01 with 1,201 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $17.75 to $18.01.

Huaneng Power International (HNP) was a major loser in the sector, falling 2% (-58 cents) to close at $28.43 with 66,677 shares moving. The stock traded between $28.40 and $28.80. Shares have been on on the rise over the past three months, climbing 29 cents (1%) from a price of $28.72 on July 23, 2012.

ITC Holdings (ITC) declined 1.2% to close at $72.47, moving below its 50-day moving average of $72.09 and 200-day moving average of $72.85. Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (EOC) rose 1.2% to close at $50.58, crossing its 50-day moving average of $50.49.

Edison International (EIX) fell 1.3% to close at $44.25, moving down to 0.5% above its 200-day moving average of $44.01. Copano Energy L.L.C (CPNO) rose 1.3% to close at $30.28, getting closer to its 200-day moving average or $31.08.
