As a proxy for the sector, the ETF tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. As trading began today, XLV was up 1.5% over the last thirty trading days, and the S&P 500 climbed 3.7%.

Synergetics USA (SURG) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 11.5% (-59 cents) to close at $4.54, as 183,282 shares moved. The stock traded between $4.36 and $5.25. Over the last three months, the stock has lost $1.48 (-24.6%) from a price of $6.02 on May 10, 2012.

VIVUS (VVUS) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 9.2%. The stock closed at $23.18 with 6.3 million shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $22.07 to $23.52. The share price has been decreasing in the last month, down $5.29 (-18.6%) from $28.47 on July 9, 2012. Brookdale Senior Living (BKD) also gained today, climbing $1.51 (+9.1%) to close at $18.17.

LHC Group (LHCG) fell 4.7% to close at $16.86, crossing its 50-day moving average of $17.36.

Cornerstone Therapeutics (ATRI) fell 8.8% to close at $6.63, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $6.53. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $217.40.
