The Utilities sector (XLU) showed little change during trading today while the S&P 500 rose 1.7%.

The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLU was up 1.4% over the last thirty trading days. The S&P 500, in comparison, went up 2.8%.

Increasing 4.6% (+$1.38) to close at $31.23, Connecticut Water Service (CTWS) was a major gainer in the sector. Today, 30,138 shares traded hands. The stock traded in a range of $29.89 to $31.49. Shares have shown some positive movement over the last two months as the price has climbed $3.85 (14.1%) from a price of $27.38 on May 15, 2012.

Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE) fell 1% to close at $14.44, crossing its 50-day moving average of $14.50. Meanwhile, Targa Resources (TRGP) climbed 4.5% to close at $45, moving past its 200-day moving average of $43.32.

OGE Energy (OGE) rose 1.5% to close at $52.11, approaching its 50-day moving average of $52.47. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $52.96.

Cheniere Energy (LNG) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 1.9% (-29 cents) to close at $15.30, as 6.2 million shares moved. The stock traded between $15.14 and $15.78. Share price is up, having risen $2.79 (22.3%) from $12.51 on June 13, 2012.
